DELE B1 Exam Structure & Scoring

The DELE B1 is issued by the Instituto Cervantes and tests Spanish proficiency across four skills, grouped into two scoring pairs. You must pass both groups to earn the diploma.

Group 1 — Reading & Writing

Test Duration Score
Reading Comprehension (Comprensión de lectura) 70 min /25
Written Expression & Interaction (Expresión e interacción escritas) 60 min /25
Group 1 Total /50 (min 30)

Group 2 — Oral Skills

Test Duration Score
Listening Comprehension (Comprensión auditiva) 40 min /25
Oral Expression & Interaction (Expresión e interacción orales) 15 min + prep /25
Group 2 Total /50 (min 30)

Pass requirement: Score at least 30/50 in each group (60%). Both groups must pass — even if your total exceeds 60, failing one group means failing the exam.

Oral expression tasks: Describe a past experience, describe a photo, and express your opinion on a topic. No penalty for incorrect answers.

Written Expression Training

Practice writing structured responses within DELE constraints. Nico corrects grammar, improves clarity, and helps you develop ideas fully — exactly what examiners look for.

Vocab & Grammar Drills

Mistake & Correction

Nico
¿Cómo te sentiste después de la entrevista de trabajo?
You
Soy muy cansado después de la entrevista, pero creo que fue bien.
Nico
Close! "Cansado" describes a temporary state, so use estar: "Estoy muy cansado." Use "ser" for permanent traits (soy alto, soy español) and "estar" for states that change (estoy cansado, estoy contento). The rest is great!

Natural Flow

Nico
Cuéntame sobre un viaje que hiciste recientemente.
You
El mes pasado fui a Barcelona con mi familia. Visitamos la Sagrada Familia y comimos paella cerca del mar.
Nico
Muy bien! Clear past tense and good detail. Try adding how you felt about it — this is exactly what DELE examiners want. For example: "Lo que más me gustó fue pasear por las Ramblas al atardecer." The expression lo que más me gustó (what I liked most) is very useful for DELE oral tasks.

Common DELE B1 Mistakes Nico Helps Fix

  • Ser vs estar confusion — saying "Soy cansado" (I am tired as a trait) instead of "Estoy cansado" (I feel tired right now).
  • Incorrect subjunctive triggers — "Espero que vienes mañana" instead of the correct "Espero que vengas mañana" (subjunctive after wishes/hopes).
  • Por vs para confusion — "Estudio por aprobar" instead of "Estudio para aprobar" (para for goals/purpose).
  • False cognates with English — using "actualmente" to mean "actually" when it means "currently" in Spanish.
  • Pronoun placement errors — "Lo he no visto" instead of the correct "No lo he visto" (negation before pronoun).

Nico catches these patterns early and reinforces stronger phrasing through repeated, guided practice.

A Practical 15–20 Minute Routine

  1. Read Nico's prompt and write your response in Spanish (8–10 minutes).
  2. Review corrections and rewrite one improved version (5 minutes).
  3. Complete quick vocab drills for your weak words (3–5 minutes).

Repeat daily for steady progress before your DELE B1 exam date.
