Exam Structure & Scoring

The Goethe-Zertifikat B1 is issued by the Goethe-Institut and tests practical German communication across four modules. Each module can be taken independently.

Module Duration Score Pass Mark
Reading (Lesen) 65 min /100 60/100
Listening (Hören) 40 min /100 60/100
Writing (Schreiben) 60 min /100 60/100
Speaking (Sprechen) 15 min /100 60/100
Total /400 240/400

Modular flexibility: Each module can be taken independently on different dates — even at different test centers. If you pass a module, the result is valid and counts toward your full certificate. You only retake the modules you haven't passed yet.

Mistake & Correction

Nico
Erzähl mir von deiner letzten Reise. Wohin bist du gefahren?
You
Ich bin nach Berlin gefahren, weil ich wollte das Museum besuchen. Ich habe mit dem Freundin in einem Café gegessen.
Nico
Two things to fix! In subordinate clauses with "weil", the verb goes to the end: "weil ich das Museum besuchen wollte". Also, "Freundin" is feminine, so dative needs "der": "mit der Freundin". Full version: "Ich bin nach Berlin gefahren, weil ich das Museum besuchen wollte. Ich habe mit der Freundin in einem Café gegessen."

Natural Flow

Nico
Wie sieht dein normaler Arbeitstag aus?
You
Ich stehe um sieben Uhr auf und fahre mit der U-Bahn ins Büro. Meistens habe ich vormittags Besprechungen und nachmittags arbeite ich an Projekten.
Nico
Sehr gut! Clear and well-structured. Try adding what you do during your lunch break — for example: "In der Mittagspause gehe ich in die Kantine." The word Kantine (cafeteria) is useful for workplace German.

Common B1 Mistakes Nico Helps Fix

  • Word order in subordinate clauses — Failing to move the verb to the end after conjunctions like weil, dass, wenn. Example: "...weil ich bin müde" instead of "...weil ich müde bin."
  • Accusative vs. dative case confusion — Using the wrong case after prepositions or with verbs. Example: "Ich helfe dem Mann" (correct dative) vs. "Ich helfe den Mann" (wrong accusative).
  • False friends from English — Words that look similar but mean different things. "aktuell" means "current" not "actual"; "bekommen" means "to get" not "to become."
  • Noun gender errors — Assigning wrong gender. "das Mädchen" (neuter due to -chen suffix) not "die Mädchen"; "der Stuhl" (masculine) not "das Stuhl."
  • Reflexive verb mistakes — Forgetting the reflexive pronoun. "Ich erinnere mich an den Tag" not "Ich erinnere den Tag."

Nico catches these patterns early and reinforces stronger phrasing through repeated, guided practice.

A Practical 15–20 Minute Routine

  1. Read Nico's prompt and write your response in German (8–10 minutes).
  2. Review corrections and rewrite one improved version (5 minutes).
  3. Complete quick vocab drills for your weak words (3–5 minutes).

Repeat daily for steady progress before your Goethe-Zertifikat B1 exam date.
